Sony Music Masterworks

The Sony Music Masterworks website was built as a dynamic platform for showcasing artists, new releases, video, playlists, news, and the broader Masterworks family of brands.

Using the WordPress API and custom Gutenberg blocks, I developed a modular system that allows rich media and promotional content to be managed dynamically while maintaining a highly visual, responsive experience. The current homepage combines promotional slides, YouTube video content, and a Spotify-powered featured playlist.

Sony Music Masterworks manages a diverse roster of artists and a continuous stream of releases, videos, playlists, news, and promotional campaigns.

The site needed to make this frequently changing content easy to manage while giving visitors direct paths to discover artists and engage with their music.

A second challenge was connecting the broader Masterworks ecosystem. Multiple properties exist under the Masterworks umbrella, requiring a central experience that could introduce the brands and direct visitors to the appropriate destination.

Allow frequently changing promotional content to be updated without requiring custom development for every change.

Bring YouTube and Spotify content directly into the experience rather than treating external platforms as an afterthought.

Create visual interactions that give visitors immediate access to artists and their external channels.

Provide a central entry point for discovering the different brands and properties within Masterworks.

The site was approached as a modular music platform rather than a collection of static pages.

Custom Gutenberg blocks created reusable building components for editors while preserving the visual structure of the site. Content could therefore evolve alongside new artists, releases, campaigns, and featured media.

The homepage acts as a continuously changing promotional hub. A large slider highlights priority releases and artists, followed by featured YouTube videos and a Spotify playlist, creating multiple opportunities for visitors to immediately engage with the music.

The artist experience extends this discovery model with a visual roster of performers.

Homepage

The homepage establishes a media-first experience built around discovery.

Promotional slides provide prominent space for current releases and campaigns, while dedicated video and playlist sections allow visitors to watch or listen without navigating through multiple layers of the site. The live implementation currently surfaces YouTube videos alongside an embedded Spotify playlist.

Artist Discovery

The artist page uses imagery as the primary navigation device. Interactive rollover states reveal social and external links, turning each artist image into an access point to their broader digital presence.

Individual artist content can also connect visitors with platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and artist websites.

Masterworks Splash Experience

I also developed a dedicated splash page that serves as an entry point into the wider Masterworks network.

Rather than requiring visitors to understand the organizational structure beforehand, the experience provides direct paths into the individual Masterworks properties. The live page, for example, currently introduces Sony Classical and directs visitors into its dedicated website.

Sony Music Soundtracks required different behavior, so its interaction was handled through a popup containing social media destinations rather than the standard external-site route.

The core of the project was a custom WordPress implementation built around reusable Gutenberg components and API-driven content.

Key development included:

Custom Gutenberg blocks for reusable page components

WordPress API integration for dynamic content

Responsive promotional slider

YouTube-linked featured video components

Spotify playlist integration

Interactive artist cards with rollover states and social links

Responsive layouts across desktop and mobile

Masterworks brand splash-page experience

Conditional interaction for Sony Music Soundtracks

I also developed a dynamic video page connected to the Masterworks YouTube channel. Rather than manually maintaining a separate video library in WordPress, the concept used YouTube as the content source so new channel content could populate the website dynamically.

Although that feature was ultimately removed from the production experience, it demonstrates an important part of the development approach: using APIs and external content sources to reduce duplicate content management.

The result is a flexible digital platform that brings together content management, artist discovery, music streaming, video, and brand navigation within one WordPress ecosystem.

Custom Gutenberg development gives editors reusable tools for managing changing promotional content, while API and third-party integrations connect the website to the platforms where the music and video already live.

The broader Masterworks splash experience extends that thinking beyond a single website, creating a central gateway into the collection of brands that make up the Masterworks digital presence.

The project demonstrates the ability to combine WordPress engineering, API integration, component-based development, responsive UX, and interactive front-end design into a scalable platform for a major entertainment brand.
