AC/DC Initial Generator

The AC/DC Tour Campaign was a large-scale promotional experience featuring multiple microsites designed to engage fans and build excitement around the tour. One interactive experience allowed users to generate personalized, shareable graphics featuring their initials in AC/DC’s signature typography.

The project combined dynamic image generation, CSS3 animation, video editing, and social media integration to create an immersive experience that encouraged fan participation and extended the campaign’s reach beyond the website.

The campaign needed an interactive experience that would encourage fans to participate in the tour promotion and share branded content across social media.

A significant technical challenge emerged when the hosting environment was found to prohibit PHP execution, preventing the original server-side image generation system from functioning.

The solution needed to preserve the intended user experience while working within the hosting limitations.

Create a personalized experience that gives fans something unique to share.

Incorporate social sharing that promotes the tour beyond the website.

Use animation, dimensional effects, and atmospheric visuals to reinforce AC/DC’s energetic brand identity.

Deliver dynamic-feeling personalization without relying on server-side PHP execution.

The central concept was to transform fans’ initials into personalized AC/DC-branded artwork.

Users entered their first and last names, generating a square graphic featuring their initials in the band’s recognizable typography. The image could be shared across social platforms, with direct sharing incorporating promotional messaging about the tour.

After generating their artwork, users could explore an additional interactive experience featuring a rotating 3D album box surrounded by atmospheric red smoke.

The combination of personalization, social sharing, and interactive animation turned a promotional microsite into a participatory fan experience.

Personalized Image Generator

The experience begins with a simple interaction: entering a first and last name.

The website uses the initials to display a personalized graphic, giving fans a piece of campaign artwork they can share.

Social Media Integration

The generated artwork was designed for social media distribution. Sharing directly from the website added tour-related messaging, connecting individual participation to the larger promotional campaign.

Interactive 3D Album Box

A secondary experience, accessed through a More button, revealed an animated album box.

Rather than using a 3D rendering engine, the box was constructed entirely with CSS3. Six individual images were positioned and transformed into the faces of a cube, then animated together to create the appearance of a rotating three-dimensional object.

Atmospheric Motion

To reinforce the campaign’s visual identity, stock footage of smoke was edited, colorized red, and converted into a seamless looping MP4.

The animated background added depth and movement while complementing the rotating album box and AC/DC branding.

The project combined front-end animation, asset generation, and a custom workaround for hosting restrictions.

Key development included:

Personalized initials generator

Social sharing with promotional messaging

CSS3 3D transforms and keyframe animation

Six-image construction of a rotating album box

Seamless MP4 background loop

Video color grading to match campaign branding

PHP-based batch image generation

Automated asset naming and web optimization

Client-side image lookup and display

Solving the Image Generation Challenge

The original system was designed to generate personalized images dynamically. However, the hosting server did not support PHP execution.

To preserve the functionality, I developed a PHP batch-processing script that generated every possible two-letter combination, producing 676 individual images.

Each image was automatically named according to its corresponding initials and prepared for web delivery.

I then rewrote the website’s image retrieval logic to locate and display the appropriate pre-generated asset based on the user’s input.

This approach eliminated the need for server-side image generation while maintaining the appearance of a personalized, dynamically generated experience.

The completed microsite delivered an interactive promotional experience that combined fan personalization, social engagement, and immersive visual effects.

The pre-generated image system successfully worked around the hosting limitations without changing the intended user experience. Meanwhile, the CSS3 album animation and custom smoke footage created dimensional visual effects without requiring a dedicated 3D engine.

The project demonstrates the ability to combine creative front-end development, motion design, automated asset production, and practical technical problem-solving within the constraints of a large entertainment campaign.
